2 Things To Do If Your Toilet Is Overflowing

If you woke up in the middle of the night and need to go to the bathroom and you walk into a lake instead of your bathroom, odds are that you are going to wake up pretty quickly. You are going to have to be awake so that you can figure out what's going on. If you notice that you have water running out of your toilet, you need to know how to fix it as soon as possible. There are things that you are going to need to do so that you stop the water from flowing out of your toilet and out into your house. 

Turn the Water Off

The first thing that you are going to have to do turn the water that is going to your toilet off. If you look at the bottom of the toilet where the pipes go into the tank, you will see a knob. That knob will turn off the water to the toilet. That way, you won't be getting more water coming into your bathroom. Just turn that knob until you have no more water running into your bathroom. If that doesn't stop the water running into your bathroom, then you are going to have to turn off the water for the house. There are different places where that main turn off could be. One is at the water meter, which is usually in your yard. The master turn off could also be wherever the water first enters your house. If you live in an apartment, then you should talk to your landlord to see where the cut off for your house is. 

Check the Tank

Another thing that you are going to need to do is to check the toilet tank. You are going to look to see if anything is making the tank run. Look to see if the flapper is stuck in the up position. That would make water keep running into your tank and then into your toilet. If your flapper is stuck in the up position, then when the water gets turned off to the toilet, then the water that is left in the tank will have already run down into the toilet. But when you look at the tank, you should be able to see the flapper if it's stuck so that it's standing up. 

Trying to figure out what's going on with your toilet when you have a flood happening in the middle of the night is important. That can help you figure out what the problem is until the emergency plumber can get to your house to fix the problem.
